You cannot prevent an undesirable outcome but you can mitigate it. When I was a young athlete, I would regularly eat at a buffet and have a good lunch followed by lunch, dinner, and desserts. While I was certainly not a fat person eating three meals a day, this approach did prevent the accumulation of excess fat in my body (especially in my gut area).
